Our mission is to improve the lives of lung transplant patients and their families.

our purpose

“My lung transplant gave me a second chance at living. The only way I’ve gotten these years is through research. I try not to dwell on it, but rejection is always in the back of my mind.”
– Gary Singleton
Lung Transplant Recipient

While transplants give recipients like Gary a second chance, they aren’t a cure.

Five years after a lung transplant, nearly half of recipients do not survive.

A lung transplant transforms lives affected by diseases such as cystic fibrosis, pulmonary fibrosis and COPD. These diseases affect more than 15 million Americans and are the fourth leading cause of death in the United States.

Rejection rates for transplanted lungs are worse than for any other transplanted organ.

We want to change that through funding research to stop all lung transplant rejection.

The Lung Transplant Foundation (LTF) was founded as a non-profit organization by a group of lung transplant recipients from Durham and Chapel Hill, NC. Since 2009, we have raised funds and advocated for lung transplant research. We also provide education and emotional support for transplant recipients and their caregivers through our Mentorship Program.

We can’t do it alone. We invite you to help us breathe life into lung transplant research by making a donation or learning more about how you can be involved.

The Mentorship Program (in honor of Joseph J. Carter) connects transplant recipients and caregivers with trained volunteer mentors who have gone through the lung transplant process themselves. It provides an essential link between people living successfully following their transplant experience and those new or adjusting to life after a transplant.
